Empathy in Children
From the Decety lab, children 5-11 years seem hard-wired for empathy. When children see pictures of other children accidentally being hurt, their brains show an adult-pattern of brain activity that suggests they feel the pain when they see someone else in pain. Studies such as these suggest that the issue with teaching children empathy is not so much the teaching of empathy itself, but rather teaching the empathetic responses to the emotions felt (i.e. what to say or what to do).
