The Wild Wild West - More Western Innovation?

Sorry no free link for this, but the Weekend Wall Street Journal reportedthe Top 20 Inventive Towns (Patents) in the United States. The West was heavily represented - with California cities capturing 8 out of the top 10 spots (San Jose #1, Sunnyvale #2, also Palo Alto, Fremont, San Diego, Cupertino, Mountain View, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Los Altos, Saratoga, Menlo Park), followed by Texas with 3 (Austin, Houston, Plano), and New York with 2 (Rochester and New York City) and Boise, Idaho, Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington to fill out the list.

Now considering the overrepresentation of California on this Inventive List, would you be surprised or not that California is the most reluctant state to give their kids ADHD medication? The pink states are the lowest (1.6-2.6%), then the states lightly striped come in at number 2 (2.7-3.6%). The white states were not calculated.
